BIG Clean Elections News!
We’ve got big news!
Last week, Senate Judiciary Chair Karl Rhoads’ re-introduced to the Senate the transformative “Clean Elections” legislation to create a full public financing system for our elections, which would help get big money out of our politics and level the playing field for candidates of all walks of life. Woohoo! HAPA is a proud member of the Clean Elections Hawaiʻi Coalition.
But get this: following that, early this week, the Clean Elections legislation was filed for introduction in the House by…drumroll please…none other than HOUSE SPEAKER SCOTT SAIKI himself!
WOAH! This is a big deal. The Speaker of the House is one of the most powerful legislators in Hawai‘i, responsible in part — alongside the Senate President and the Governor — for setting the legislative agenda for State Government, and playing a big role each legislative session in determining what bills live or die. For the House Speaker to be introducing the bill in the House this year sends a powerful signal that this legislation is serious, and deserves serious consideration.
We don’t fully know Speaker Saiki’s commitment to passing the legislation this session, but still, this is a big move and by celebrating Speaker Saiki and thanking him, we can show him this bill’s popularity and encourage him to use his power to continue pushing the legislation forward.
