ORGANIZATION

HAPA’s mission is to catalyze community empowerment and systemic change towards valuing people and ʻāina ahead of corporate profits.

HAPA’s works on a series of interconnected Hawaiʻi-wide campaigns to advance: fair and sustainable food systems; community-based resource stewardship; reclaiming democracy; and social and economic justice.

Fair and sustainable food systems campaigns support the transition from extractive industrial systems toward regenerative and just food systems that honor and center Kanaka Maoli traditional knowledge, practices and connection to place. We seek to increase Hawaiʻi’s food security and mitigate climate impacts. This is HAPA’s core issue area.

Community based resource stewardship:  When thinking about food security for Hawaiʻi, we think about the interconnected web of life, mauka to makai. What happens upstream affects the ocean and what happens in coastal waters affects the land. HAPA supports this kind of holistic approach. We support campaigns and policies which support lineal descendants of communities, those who have intimate relationship to place to lead the way in the care for and protection of their natural resources. HAPA has engaged in various campaigns across the pae ʻāina to restore healthy streamflow mauka to makai.

Our reclaiming democracy programs seek to demystify public policy and support grassroots community engagement in the political arena. Our cornerstone program, Kuleana Academy, provides in-depth political leadership training, including the nuts and bolts of how to run for office and work on political campaigns. This in-depth training is building a bench of pono political leadership for Hawaiʻi.

Economic and social justice: HAPA engages in variety of social and economic campaigns include the fight for a living wage, tax fairness and affordable housing. We seek to build the intersection between our various campaigns.
